MAIDO BECOMES THE SECOND PERUVIAN RESTAURANT IN THE HISTORY OF THIS LIST TO REACH NUMBER 1
IT CURRENTLY RANKS NUMBER 2 ON THE LATIN AMERICAN LIST OF THE WORLD’S 50 BEST
It’s been official for a few hours now: Maido is number 1 on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. Chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura was beaming with joy at the gala held tonight at the Lingotto Fiere in Turin, capital of the Piedmont region of Italy.
As of today, Maido is the Best Restaurant in the World, taking over from Spain’s Disfrutar and becoming the second Peruvian restaurant in history to achieve this position, which was held in 2023 by Central, run by Virgilio Martínez and Pía León.
Maido is Micha’s most representative project and a true reflection of his personality: friendly, funny and elegant. Throughout its more than 15-year of history, Maido has won many awards both locally in Peru and abroad. After climbing from Number 5 on The World’s 50 Best list last night, Maido has become a legend in Peru and Latin America. Under Micha’s leadership, it has consolidated its place on the global gastronomic scene as a benchmark for Nikkei and Peruvian cuisine.
Today, Micha celebrates this important milestone for his restaurant and his career by stating that, “every award is special because they come at stages of life that are unique and unrepeatable. I am extremely excited; this is a dream come true for my team and for me. I can’t wait to get to Lima to celebrate with all of them and with my family and friends”.
Micha is a restless Chef who loves to explore new horizons and create new things, that is why in his recipes there is room for both learned and inherited traditions and the most daring creativity. Micha’s cuisine is full of umami, but at the same time delicate and balanced. Through his dishes, he invites us to travel throughout the geography of Peru, discovering the essential ingredients with which he creates a singular and unique experience.
At the 2024 edition held in Las Vegas, Micha felt the affection of the public and, above all, of his colleagues, as he received the prestigious Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award 2024, voted for by chefs and announced to warm applause from everyone present. A year later, Micha is once again at the top of the list, but this time he does so with Maido, reflecting the work of his entire team.
This has undoubtedly been an incredible night for Micha and the entire Maido team, who have once again positioned Peru in general, and Lima in particular, as one of the most incredible gastronomic destinations in Latin America and the world, welcoming back the Best Restaurant in the World within its borders.
